The oboe had reached the highest degree of virtuosity already during the baroque era. The trumpet only later achieved the same with the invention of the valve henceforth endowing it with spectacular agility. What breathtaking coloraturas and dazzling stretta effects Ponchielli was able to compose especially for this instrument!
The euphonium was first patented in Vienna in 1844. Ponchielli also composed a concerto for this novel wind instrument in the tenor range and in it called on the soloist to demonstrate the highest technical and tonal versatility. No matter whether for trumpet, oboe, or euphonium, this music is a feast for every sound fan drawn to the grand opera.
